ST3 Anaesthetics Information

Anaesthetists form the largest single hospital medical specialty and their skills are used in all aspects of patient care. Whilst the perioperative anaesthetic care of the surgical patient is the core of specialty work (and this includes all types of surgery from simple body surface surgery in adults to the most complex surgery in patients of all ages, including the premature newborn) many anaesthetists have a much wider scope of practice which may include:

  • The preoperative preparation of surgical patients
  • The resuscitation and stabilisation of patients in the Emergency Department
  • Pain relief in labour and obstetric anaesthesia
  • Intensive care medicine
  • Transport of acutely ill and injured patients
  • Pre-hospital emergency care
  • Pain medicine including:
  • The relief of post-operative pain
  • Acute pain medicine and the management of acute teams
  • Chronic and cancer pain management
  • The provision of sedation and anaesthesia for patients undergoing various procedures outside the operating theatre. Examples of this include different endoscopic procedures, interventional radiology and dental surgery (this list is not exclusive)

Interview dates and venues:

Interviews will take place from Tuesday 14th March 2017 to Friday 7th April 2017 in each of the recruiting deaneries.

Posts commence from Wednesday 2nd August 2017.

The expected duration of the programme is 5 years, however the actual duration may depend on the circumstances of the individual.

Please note that the Anaesthetics National Recruitment Office and Health Education West Midlands have a strict application policy and will not accept applications submitted after the submissions deadline.

The Postgraduate Dean confirms that these placements and/or programmes have the required educational and Dean’s approval. The Training Programme is equally open to those who may, either from the outset or subsequently, wish to train less than full time or job share.

When invited to interview, candidates will be informed of all documents that they are required to bring with them.

Pay Scales

All trainees should be paid monthly at the rates set out in the national terms and conditions of service for hospital medical and dental staff and doctors in public health medicine and the community health service (England and Wales), “the TCS”, as amended from time to time. The pay scales are reviewed annually. Part-time posts will be paid pro-rata.

Pay scales will be those that apply to Junior Doctors and Dentists of the relevant country within the UK. Junior Dentist pay in England transfers to the new contract from 2017.
